Good Boy!
19. August 2009 by JFargo.
Kramer again! I’m such a sucker for the BIG dogs. I mean, just look at all the pictures I took of Roscoe when I was helping out at the SPCA with him!
Of COURSE I have to show Kramer again! Just look at him and his awesome mug!

Kramer, The Big Goof
14. August 2009 by JFargo.
Don’t you just want to pet this big guy’s belly? And by “big guy” I mean over 200 lbs! He’s an English Mastiff; huge and proud. Thanks to Pammy, Kramer’s mom, for providing this cute shot of him showing his gentle side. (According to Pammy, he only HAS a gentle side.)

SPCA
29. March 2009 by JFargo.
One of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done is volunteer at my local SPCA, especially when I decided I was going to help Roscoe find a home, no matter what.
Yes, he jumped up a lot, bruised my entire right arm, made me bleed a little bit, and ruined my favorite leather jacket by deciding that one of the pockets was a play toy and playing tug-of-war with it, ripping it from the rest of the jacket. Yes, going to the SPCA every single day, twice a day, was tiring. Yes, it was frustrating seeing that the people there were afraid of him even when he was calm and relaxed, that even many of the workers wouldn’t give him a second chance.
But I would do it all again, in a heartbeat, because, well, just look at him. It was all worth it.

How To…
21. March 2009 by JFargo.
Recently I wrote a couple of articles about working with dogs, and I thought I’d share them. The one that took the most work was How to Train a Large Dog to Have Good Manners, and features this big guy here. Roscoe was my test case, and I’d say it went rather well seeing as he was adopted. (I miss him.)
And yes, Roscoe is pulling a 300 lb man across the ground in this picture. He really was a big boy, wasn’t he?

Roscoe Needs A Home
8. March 2009 by JFargo.
Roscoe needs a home, badly. Until I offered to help with him, the SPCA only had him slated on an “administrator’s hold” until February 25th, at which point if they hadn’t found anywhere for him to go, they would have to put him down. There was no way I was going to let that happen to this big guy, so I offered to walk him twice a day and work on teaching him manners.
We would foster him, if we had a big enough outside house to keep him in. Understand, I don’t want to keep him outside, but as I don’t know whether or not he’s house trained, until I’m sure there’s no way we can keep him inside. Plus, more importantly, we don’t know how our girls would react to him, and we don’t have any other place in the house where we could keep him.
So essentially, if we want to foster Roscoe until he finds a forever home, we need to buy an outdoor shed, and those things are expensive.
Hopefully, in the mean time, someone will adopt him from the Delaware SPCA.

SPCA Mastiff, Roscoe
7. March 2009 by JFargo.
Every weekend I’ve started featuring a dog in need at an animal shelter. As my wife likes to say, I’m in the business of “saving the world, one dog at a time.” Of course, she also says I’m a sucker for any dog that looks at me. She’s right on both accounts.
Roscoe’s one of those dogs that I’m a sucker for. I’ve been going to the SPCA every day, twice most days, to walk him and train him so that he becomes adoptable. I think he’s at a stage where someone could adopt him if they were patient, knew how to work with big dogs, and were willing to help train him. I’m working with him so that anybody could adopt him, but at this point he still has a little bit of “wild dog” in him.
Do you know somebody in the Delaware area that might went to help me train this big guy? I’m not a professional trainer by any means, and have tried contacting a few local pros, but nobody seems to want to have anything to do with the big guy. I think his size (120 lbs) scares people off, which is too bad because he’s really just a big baby.
If you think you know a way to help, I’m all ears. I’m going to keep featuring the big guy on my SPCA Saturdays and Sundays until he gets adopted; he just needs a good home.
Don’t forget to vote for the cutest pooch.

I Could Use A Little Help
1. March 2009 by JFargo.
This is Roscoe, a 120 lb Mastiff mix being held at the local SPCA. He’s been there for over a month now, and unfortunately the staff is nearing their limit with him. His shear immensity, coupled with the fact that he has never been taught manners (no jumping up, no mouthing, etc) has most of the staff scared to take him out of his when it comes time to walk him, clean the cage, feed him, etc.
They called me, knowing that I love big dopey dogs*, and essentially said “here’s the situation, we can’t handle it any more. HELP!”
We couldn’t foster him. We don’t even know if he’s housebroken, let alone how he would react with our dogs, and our things. We could foster him outside if we had something large enough to house him that could help him stay warm over night, but he’s a 120 lb mastiff, and most companies don’t make things his size. Maria, my wife came up with a decent idea:
I could become Roscoe’s daily walker, in at 8 am when they’re cleaning the cages in the morning, and again at 6 pm when they’re cleaning them out for the evening. That way the staff theoretically never has to handle Roscoe, and I could spend an hour with him each day, teaching him better manners. It’s been working really well!
But here’s why I need help: This big guy needs a home. The SPCA wants him to have a home experienced with large dogs, no small children, and probably no other pets. They’ve tried a few of the local Mastiff Rescues, but for whatever reason they’ve all said “not our problem.” If you can think of something, anything, that might help us get this big guy adopted, please write me a comment.
I want to see this turn out for the best, but if necessary I will continue going to the SPCA twice a day, every day of the week, for as long as it takes. This big guy deserves that.
*Or as my wife puts it, I’m “a sucker for any dog that needs help.” It’s true.

Waiting To Hear
28. February 2009 by JFargo.
Today is the day I find out if this big guy has been adopted from the local SPCA. I’ve been helping every morning and every night get him from his cage to the outside where he works out his energy for a while so that other people can handle him during the day. I really hope it’s been enough, and I hope the meeting goes well today. Please keep your fingers crossed for him.

Roscoe, The Huge Dog
23. February 2009 by JFargo.
My wife said no. I’m not allowed to keep him.
So sure, he drools a little*, and he’s a little big**, but at least he knows how to play with toys***! We could overcome those issues!
Who’s with me? Help me convince my wife that we need a Mastiff mix that weighs more than both of our dogs added together!
*After less than an hour of playing it was necessary for us to wash all our clothes due to the slobber, and this was without him even having a drink during that time.
**Compared to me, 120 lbs is a “little” big.
***He thinks that arms are toys.
Stumble It!

English Mastiff - Kramer
29. September 2008 by JFargo.
This is Kramer, an English Mastiff. His owner, Pam, tells me that he’s small for his breed, which I find amazing. Understand that I will often call St. Bernards “cute little puppies*,” and you’ll understand Kramer’s sheer size when I say he was big.
Gentle though, and such a sweetie. Pam tells me that he’s gone blind, which often affects dogs in such a way as to make them a little more cranky, but Kramer was affectionate and friendly.
I’m truly appreciative that Pam allowed me, a perfect stranger, to take a few pictures of this awesome dog. She also sent a few pictures my way, and I’d like to share my favorite of the ones she sent.
Thank you, Pam! Please give Kramer a hug from me!
*Getting me some strange stares from the owners, I’ll admit.
