SPCA

Roscoe Says Thank You

One of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done is volunteer at my local SPCA, especially when I decided I was going to help Roscoe find a home, no matter what.

Yes, he jumped up a lot, bruised my entire right arm, made me bleed a little bit, and ruined my favorite leather jacket by deciding that one of the pockets was a play toy and playing tug-of-war with it, ripping it from the rest of the jacket. Yes, going to the SPCA every single day, twice a day, was tiring. Yes, it was frustrating seeing that the people there were afraid of him even when he was calm and relaxed, that even many of the workers wouldn’t give him a second chance.

But I would do it all again, in a heartbeat, because, well, just look at him. It was all worth it.

How To…

How Not To Do It

Recently I wrote a couple of articles about working with dogs, and I thought I’d share them. The one that took the most work was How to Train a Large Dog to Have Good Manners, and features this big guy here. Roscoe was my test case, and I’d say it went rather well seeing as he was adopted. (I miss him.)

And yes, Roscoe is pulling a 300 lb man across the ground in this picture. He really was a big boy, wasn’t he?

Roscoe Was Adopted!

Roscoe the Mastiff was adopted!

Roscoe was adopted yesterday by a family with two Saint Bernard dogs! Apparently they all had a meet-and-greet, and things went fantastic! I wish I could have been there to say goodbye, and I’ll definitely miss the guy, but I’m just so excited for him, and happy that he has a home!

I wish the people that adopted him the best of luck. We never did know for sure if he was housebroken, and we really hope, for their sake, that he is.

I’m so happy right now that the big guy got adopted. I don’t really have more to say; I’m just happy and a little bit proud.

Don’t forget to vote for cutest pooch!

Roscoe Needs A Home

Roscoe, SPCA Mastiff

Roscoe needs a home, badly. Until I offered to help with him, the SPCA only had him slated on an “administrator’s hold” until February 25th, at which point if they hadn’t found anywhere for him to go, they would have to put him down. There was no way I was going to let that happen to this big guy, so I offered to walk him twice a day and work on teaching him manners.

We would foster him, if we had a big enough outside house to keep him in. Understand, I don’t want to keep him outside, but as I don’t know whether or not he’s house trained, until I’m sure there’s no way we can keep him inside. Plus, more importantly, we don’t know how our girls would react to him, and we don’t have any other place in the house where we could keep him.

So essentially, if we want to foster Roscoe until he finds a forever home, we need to buy an outdoor shed, and those things are expensive.

Hopefully, in the mean time, someone will adopt him from the Delaware SPCA.
