Comfy on the Couch

A small dog, comfortable on the couch

What you don’t see in this picture is my wife on the other end of the couch, with one sad little pillow, and no blankets. Look at that couch hog-dog with all her blankets and pillows! She wouldn’t even share!

Congratulations Phoebe! You have been voted “The Cutest Dog,” taking the top spot on the Cutest Pooch page, and gaining the love of the people. What are you going to do with your new-found fame?

What’s that you said? You’re going to go up against another challenger? You’re definitely cute enough to continue on in this competition! Very well! Let’s bring on:

French Bulldog

This little pooch from Cedar Park, Texas just loves the camera, and the camera loves her. Look at those big ears! She’s a French Bulldog, almost 1 year old and I think she’s a cutie. Her name is Lacy Mae.

Lacy Mae, welcome to the competition!

You have until Tuesday, March 3rd at midnight to vote. The winner will continue on (and will be “immortalized” on the Cutest Pooch page) and the loser will still be cute, but won’t continue on in the competition. Vote for your favorite, and encourage your friends to vote!

Stumble It!

A Success Story

A brown dog, Pooh Bear, standing

Thanks go out to the local SPCA for trusting our judgment with this little girl. After she bit Maria, breaking the skin, we were worried that she was not going to be allowed to be adopted out, that, honestly, she was going to be put down as unadoptable. They called and asked our opinion, and we told them that we thought she would make a good pet for an older couple with no dogs, no kids, and a sedate lifestyle.

A few days after she got put back up for adoption, she was adopted by an older couple who are home all the time, have no other animals, no kids, and no grandchildren! Yes! I went from depressed over thinking that she might not get adopted, to elated. I loved this little girl, and I’m glad she’s found a good home.

I’m loading this ahead of time. If you’re seeing this text it means I didn’t get a chance to write anything interesting. However, at least you get to see a cute picture, right?

Pooh Bear: The Boss?

Our foster dog Pooh Bear pretends to be in charge while my other dog MaiTai is sleeping.

Pooh Bear, our little foster dog, is still here and looking for a good home. In the meantime, she likes to pretend to be the boss while both other dogs are sound asleep. When she tries to be the boss while they were awake, they would quickly put her in her place.

It’s actually kind of funny, but makes me really wish we could find her a good home. We think she could use an experienced owner with no large dogs, but that PB would be fine with other small dogs. The experienced owner thing is because, as I’ve said before, some people just don’t understand dog behavior, and that some of the things she does aren’t bad, they’re just a little strange.

Like wanting to be in her cage, all the time. That’s actually good behavior, because they’re supposed to feel secure in their little shelters. It’s just weird.

This is definitely one of my favorite pictures of Pooh Bear, just because it captures her ideology perfectly: “I’m the boss while MaiTai’s asleep!”

Guess Who’s Back?

An SPCA rescue was returned
Click for full size

What is it with people? I just don’t understand.

Pooh Bear, our second foster dog, was returned to the SPCA because of behavioral issues. Unfortunately, she nipped at the people’s 8-year-old son, which understandably* scared them, and they felt that the only recourse they had was to return her to the SPCA.

I wish they had called us. We would have helped them train her. Instead, Bonnie, the awesome lady in charge at the local SPCA, asked us to foster her as they didn’t have room.

So, Pooh Bear’s back with us.

Any experienced dog owners interested in adopting this little sweetie? She does have some issues that have to be worked out (that she didn’t have before these folks adopted her, I’d like to add), but someone who knows about dogs should be able to teach her better manners.

*Understandable only because they were first-time dog owners. A dog, especially a young one, nipping at somebody’s chin isn’t a desired thing, and should be corrected, but it’s actually the dog showing that they accept your dominance. It’s normal.

MaiTai Wasn’t a Fan

Three dogs, one barking at the other.

Here you can easily see that MaiTai, my lovable little girl, can get a little mean-spirited around other dogs. Despite the fact that our first foster dog was cute and smart as a whip, MaiTai just couldn’t find it in her heart to like having her around.

Which, in its own way is a good thing, I suppose. I hear it’s bad form to offer to be foster parents for your local SPCA, fall in love with the first dog you get, adopt them, and then never foster another one. MaiTai was just helping us realize that.

And if you look closely, you can see how Monster felt about the whole situation too.

Our first foster dog, Pooh Bear.

Pooh Bear was our first foster puppy from the local SPCA. She’s a little over a year old and small, weighing in at about 20 pounds. Not only was she cute, she was also smart as a whip, and got along fairly well with other dogs! The perfect combination of looks, charm, and awesomeness that came together and got her adopted by a loving, if inexperienced, family.

Of course, it helped that we taught her “Stick ‘em up” as one of her tricks. That’s what she’s doing here. We didn’t teach her to roll over to do it; she would put her paws up like that no matter what pose she was in.

What’s the best trick you’ve ever taught a dog?
